Reduce Heat Tool Usage

Every session with a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling wand uses energy. Air-drying when possible and choosing a haircut that looks good without heat styling are the most impactful changes. If you must use heat, modern tools with efficient heating elements and auto-shutoff features use less energy than older models.

Sustainable Color Options

Plant-based and demi-permanent color options use fewer harsh chemicals and less packaging than traditional permanent dye. They fade naturally without hard demarcation lines, meaning fewer salon visits for touch-ups.

If you do use permanent color, spacing appointments to every six to eight weeks instead of four reduces chemical processing and salon resource consumption.

Towel and Accessory Choices

Replace disposable hair ties with durable, fabric-covered options. A microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt for drying lasts years, reduces friction damage, and eliminates the need for paper towel blotting.

The Bigger Picture

Sustainable hair care is not about perfection — it is about making better choices where you can. Even adopting two or three of these practices reduces your hair care environmental footprint meaningfully. And the bonus is that most sustainable practices — less washing, less heat, less product — also improve your hair health.
