How to Determine Your Face Shape

Why Face Shape Matters for Hairstyles

Your face shape is the single most important factor in choosing a flattering hairstyle. A cut that looks stunning on one person can look completely wrong on another, and face shape is almost always the reason. Understanding yours takes the guesswork out of every salon visit.

The Five Main Face Shapes

Most faces fall into one of five categories: oval, round, square, heart, and oblong. Some people sit between two categories, and that is perfectly normal — the goal is to find your closest match.

How to Measure Your Face

You need a flexible tape measure and a mirror, or simply a ruler and a front-facing photo. Take four measurements:

1. Forehead width. Measure across the widest part of your forehead, from hairline to hairline.

2. Cheekbone width. Measure across the widest point of your cheekbones, typically just below the outer corners of your eyes.

3. Jawline width. Measure from the tip of your chin to below your ear, at the point where your jaw angles upward. Double this number.

4. Face length. Measure from the center of your hairline straight down to the tip of your chin.

Identifying Your Shape

Oval: Face length is about 1.5 times the cheekbone width. The forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, and the jawline is gently rounded. This is considered the most versatile shape because nearly every hairstyle works.

Round: Cheekbone width and face length are roughly equal. The jawline and hairline are rounded with soft angles. Hairstyles that add height or length — like quiffs, pompadours, and layered cuts — create a more balanced appearance.

Square: Forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are similar in width, and the jaw has strong, defined angles. Textured styles, side parts, and anything that softens the angular jawline tend to be most flattering.

Heart: The forehead is the widest measurement, and the face tapers to a narrow, sometimes pointed chin. Side-swept bangs, chin-length bobs, and styles with volume at the jawline balance the wider forehead.

Oblong (Long): The face length is significantly greater than its width, and all three horizontal measurements are fairly close to each other. Styles that add width — like waves, curls, and side-swept bangs — prevent the face from appearing elongated.

The Easy Photo Method

If measuring feels tedious, try this instead: pull your hair completely back, take a front-facing photo in flat lighting, and trace the outline of your face on the screen. The resulting shape will closely match one of the five categories above.

Face Shape and AI Hairstyle Tools

Modern AI hairstyle apps can detect your face shape automatically from a photo and recommend styles that suit your proportions. This takes the subjectivity out of self-assessment and gives you a starting point for exploring new looks.

Beyond Face Shape

While face shape is the primary guide, consider your hair texture, density, and lifestyle too. A high-maintenance style might look perfect on paper but feel impractical day-to-day. The best hairstyle is one that flatters your face and fits your routine.
