Understanding Your Curl Type

Curly hair is not a single category. The difference between a loose wave and a tight coil is enormous, and each type requires a different approach to cutting, styling, and maintenance. Knowing your curl type is the first step to making your hair look and feel its best.

The Curl Type System

Hair typing uses a number-letter system. The number indicates the overall pattern, and the letter indicates the tightness.

Type 2 — Wavy. Hair forms S-shaped waves that lie relatively close to the head.

  • 2A: Slight, barely-there waves. Fine and easy to straighten.
  • 2B: More defined S-waves starting from the mid-length. Medium texture.
  • 2C: Strong waves that border on curls. Prone to frizz.

Type 3 — Curly. Hair forms definite curls that spring from the root.

  • 3A: Loose, large curls about the diameter of a thick marker.
  • 3B: Tighter springy curls, roughly pen-sized.
  • 3C: Tight corkscrews, about the size of a pencil or straw.

Type 4 — Coily. Hair forms very tight curls or Z-shaped coils.

  • 4A: Defined coils with visible curl pattern.
  • 4B: Z-shaped bends rather than defined curls.
  • 4C: Tightest coil pattern, very dense, significant shrinkage.

Styling by Type

Type 2 (Waves). Less is more. A lightweight mousse or sea salt spray enhances waves without weighing them down. Scrunch damp hair upward and let it air-dry or use a diffuser on low heat. Avoid heavy creams that flatten the wave pattern.

Type 3 (Curls). Moisture is everything. Apply a leave-in conditioner to soaking wet hair, followed by a curl cream or gel. Use the "praying hands" method to smooth product through sections, then scrunch from ends to roots. A diffuser on medium heat sets curls without disturbing their shape.

Type 4 (Coils). Hydration and sealing are the priorities. Apply a water-based leave-in, followed by a butter or oil to seal moisture. The LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) or LCO method (Liquid, Cream, Oil) works well for most type 4 textures. Twist-outs, braid-outs, and wash-and-gos are versatile styling options.

The Curly Girl Method

The Curly Girl Method (CGM) eliminates sulfates, silicones, and heat. It works well for many curly-haired people, but it is not mandatory. Some curls respond better to occasional clarifying washes or light silicone serums. Experiment to find what your specific hair prefers.

Common Curly Hair Mistakes

Brushing dry curly hair. This breaks the curl pattern and creates frizz. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb or fingers on wet, conditioned hair instead.

Skipping deep conditioning. Curly hair is structurally more prone to dryness. A weekly or biweekly deep conditioner makes a visible difference in softness, definition, and frizz control.

Using terry cloth towels. The rough fibers create friction and frizz. Switch to a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt for scrunching and drying.

Touching hair while drying. Every touch during the drying process disrupts curl formation and introduces frizz. Apply your products, style once, and then do not touch until completely dry.

Cutting Curly Hair

Always get curly hair cut by someone experienced with your curl type. Many stylists still cut curly hair wet and straight, which leads to uneven results when it springs back into its natural pattern. A dry cut on natural curls ensures the shape is accurate.

If you are considering a new curly style — shorter layers, a different part, a shape-up — an AI hairstyle tool can show you the result before you cut. This is especially useful for curly hair, where length changes are amplified by shrinkage.
